Submissions

Submissions are currently open until Monday, October 26.

We accept poetry, short fiction, photography, and art. Each has slightly different guidelines, as described below. Please email your submission to milkweedlitmag@gmail.com, or email us with any questions or comments that may arise. Also, find this page as a Google Doc here!

General Formatting

In your submission email, please include your name, your institution, your graduating class, and the title of each of your submissions.

All text submissions must be submitted in Times New Roman and 12pt font, unless your font is a specific part of your fiction or poetry. All text submissions must be submitted either as a Google Docs file or a .docx file.  (We do not accept PDFs.)

All submissions must be titled.

Each submission must be in its own file.

Our submission process is completely name blind, so please omit your name from the file name and contents. If your name is on any of your submissions, we will ask you to resubmit. A piece of art may have the artist’s signature, but your name must not be on the file.

You may submit an art submission as an accompaniment to a fiction submission. Please submit the art submission separately from the writing submission, and clearly mark in your email which two pieces go together.

You may submit both writing and artwork – you are not limited to one or the other!

Poetry

You may submit up to eight individual poems, or one complete poetry collection.

Please title poems both in the document and the file name. Put each poem in a different file. If you are submitting a poetry collection, please include the order of the collection in your submission email.

While we will consider poetry with unique formatting, including poetry that contains shaped words and unique fonts and text configurations, we cannot publish a poem which cannot be reformatted for both a digital and printed edition of our magazine. Submitting such a poem as a standard image format (ideally .jpeg or .png) may be ideal.

If you are submitting a poem which has been inspired by another poem or artwork, please provide us with a link in your email.

Short Fiction

You may submit up to three pieces of short fiction.

Generally, short fiction submissions should not exceed three pages. If you have a piece that is longer (up to six pages), you can submit it for the Longer Fiction Selection, in which we will select one longer fiction piece to publish in the magazine. Please indicate in your submission email if you are submitting for this selection.

Please title your short fiction both in the document and in the file name.

Art and Photography

You may submit up to eight pieces of art/photography.

Your art must have been properly transmitted to the digital mediums. This means that your art submission cannot visibly be a picture of your art work; the art piece itself must be the picture. (A picture of a 3D medium will be considered as a photograph.)

Your art should be in a standard image format (ideally .jpeg or .png). (No PDFs please!) We also do not accept art which is still in an art editor file format.

Your art may have your signature on it. However, your art’s file must not have your name in its title.

Please title your art. If your art is untitled, you must give it a number: untitled1, untitled2, etc. Your title should be put into the file name of your submission. (If you truly wish for your art to remain untitled, and we accept your art for the final magazine, we will label art titled in the [untitled1, untitled2, etc.] format as simply “Untitled”.)

Some additional closing notes — please do not submit works with graphic nudity or violence, NSFW content, or insensitive/disrespectful themes. All submissions to Milkweed should follow the principles of the Haverford Honor Code with regard to trust, concern, and mutual respect.

You may not resubmit pieces to Milkweed. You also may not submit AI art (including poetry and fiction produced with AI). You may not pass off AI art as your own work, and you may not use AI to edit or polish your work.

Finally, if you are graduating or otherwise moving out of the Bi-Co, please send us a secondary email address.
